The IT industry is facing a serious talent shortage, particularly for specialist skills such as solutions network/infrastructure architects and senior software/application developers. Job vacancies in these functions can be left unfilled for up to six months. Business leaders need to change their mindset and adjust their approach to secure and retain the best talent. Below are some tips for employers to address talent scarcity in the next decade and beyond.
1. Hire contractors and part-timers
Employers, particularly in Asia prefer to hire permanent and full-time employees, rather than contractors or part-time workers. There is a view among many employers that temporary staff are less committed to their jobs as they clock in fewer hours compared to full-time staff and have a limited tenure with the company. Employers also worry that when the contractors leave, they will take with them the knowledge and experience gained during their contract.
However, as employees demand greater flexibility and autonomy, employers here will increasingly manage a blended workforce of permanent, transient and virtual teams. Recruiting more people on flexible work arrangements will enable employers to secure talent from a wider pool, including return-to-work mothers and mature-age workers - building a productive team of highly-skilled workers.
2. Have a long-term workforce strategy
Randstad’s latest World of Work research reveals that workforce planning horizons are alarmingly short in Asia Pacific, including the IT industry. Over a third of employers don’t plan their workforce even one year in advance and only 13% plan two years ahead.
Businesses need to integrate their workforce planning with their core strategic planning process, and ensure clear action paths are established and implemented to measure and review progress. This will help to ensure a competitive workforce in the future.
3. Provide training opportunities
Training in the IT sector is vital for businesses to stay ahead of the game and keep up-to-date with new innovations, technology and trends.
Employees not only value attractive salary and remuneration packages, but also training and development opportunities. By proactively providing training opportunities, employers can keep employees engaged and satisfied, lowering the staff turnover rate, and fill in the gaps for required skills.
